Hi everyone, before reading the "actual" post below, please note that Afiq has allowed me to be in charge of the vocabulary of the book, "To kill a mocking bird". So, here are the words from the first chapter. An example of how each word can be used has been included below the word itself.

[Chapter 1]
assuaged- relieved
Eg: My fear of never being able to skateboard again due to a broken ankle was assuaged when the doctor told me my ankle would recover within a week.

punt- (used in football) a kick in which the ball is dropped and then kicked before it touches the ground
Eg: Jacob punt the football so well that the entire audience stood up and clapped loudly.

apothecary- a pharmacy or drugstore.
Eg: Can you show me where the nearest apothecary is?

persecution- the act of annoying or troubling someone persistently
Eg: Mitchell was getting sick and tired of his younger sister and her persecutions.

liberal- favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs
Eg: -

brethren- fellow members
Eg: The host addressed the brethren of the community club before everyone began their dinner.

strictures- restrictions (things that keep you within limits)
[ Singular: stricture]
Eg: Father has enforced a few strictures in the house, which included "no going out after 8pm".

pursuit- effort to secure or attain
[Note; pursuit derives from the word "persue", which means to strive to gain or attain something)

tempted- to be attracted into doing something
Eg: I was tempted to leave the room as soon as an arguement broke out

lest-for fear that
Eg: I didn't dare to reveal the truth lest the teacher would scold me.

dictum-an authoritative pronouncement
Eg: Sometimes Jason would speak with a dictum.

customary- habitual
Eg: At George's house, it was customary for the ladies to be served with their food before the boys.

impotent- without force or effectiveness
Eg: He tried to punish his kids but to no avail as his punishment was too impotent.

fury-violent anger
Eg: Mr.Mark was in fury when he noticed two students pouring chemicals onto the floor in the science lab.

descendants-A person, animal, or plant whose descent can be traced to a particular individual or group.
( Note: "Descent" means to move from a higher to a lower situation. Another word is "descending".)
Eg: He is a descendant of a very royal king.

*unsullied- free from blemishes
Eg: His name was unsullied.
(Note that I have a bit of trouble understanding this word.)

arising- moving upward
Eg: Due to his hard work and determination, his entire career was arising.

*alleged-declared or stated to be as described,asserted
Eg: (I'm still trying to find one. Sorry.)

*imprudent- not wise in practical affairs
Eg: Jacob was very imprudent.

profound-intense
Eg: There was a profound silence in the classroom when the principal walked pass.

distaste- dislike (for food/drinks)
Eg: I distaste vegetables.

sagged- to bend downward due to weight or pressure
Eg: The roof sagged after a few years.

sweltering- suffering intense heat
Eg: The roof of our black car was sweltering under the sun.

wilted- to bend due to weakness
Eg: The collar on Kyle's shirt wilted after awhile.

vague- not clearly stated
Eg: He gave me a vague description about Mr Ang.

tyrannical- harsh
Eg: She was being very tyrannical towards Bob.

*entity- something that has a real existence
Eg: -

contentment-satisfaction
Eg: The waiter asked Mary whether the steak was to her contentment.

eccentric- something that is unusual
Eg: Her plans for the summer were a little bit eccentric.

*quaint- unusual in an amusing way.
Eg: Micheal's performance was rather quaint.

malevolent- wishing evil or harm to others
Eg: He was malevolent to the neighbours.

morbid-gruesome
Eg: She watched the morbid street fight in horror.

mutilated- to deprive (a person) of a body part.
Eg: His left knee was mutilated when he was four years old.

adjoined- to be next to
Eg: The church adjoined the secondary school.

predilection-a tendency to be biased
Eg: He has a predilection to animals.

domiciled- to be made into a home
Eg: This peice of land was bought by Mr Tan to be domiciled.

spurt- a sudden burst of feelings
Eg: There was a spurt of joy coming from the living room.

profane-vulgar
Eg: Upon using profane language on the principal, Tommy was expelled.

ramrod- a cleaning rod
Eg: He stood up as straight as a ramrod

meditatively-characterized by meditation
Eg:-

gouges- to cut or scoop something out
Eg: He was so violent he began to gouge the man's eyes out.

terrain- a tract of land
Eg: Keep off my terrain!

foray- a quick raid
Eg: There was a foray at the bank last week.

sneered- a facial expression usually used to jeer someone
Eg: He sneered at Mitchell when he walked past.
