Here are the vocabulary words for the thrid chapter of To Kill A Mocking Bird.

[Chapter 3]
onslaught- an attack
Eg: They stared at each other dead in the eye, and soon an onslaught broke out.

*speculation- a process of consideration
Eg: There were many speculations going on in the lecture room.

irked- irritated [Note: irk means irritate]
Eg: "He irks me", complained Jason

*expounding- giving a detailed statement
Eg: He gave expounding information about the suspect.

wonderment- causing wonder
Eg: To the wonderment of Jacob, his dad arrived home earlier than expected.

molasses-
a thick syrup produced during the refining of sugar or from sorghum
Eg: The molasses spilled all over the floor, leaving Mr Tan furious at his kids.

pitcher- a container, usually with a handle and spout or lip, for holding and pouring liquids.
Eg: "Can you pass me the pitcher of wine?" Asked John.

erratic- to turn aside from the usual or proper course in conduct or opinion
Eg: His behaviour that night was rather erratic.

tranquillity-peacefulness
Eg: There was silence and tranquillity in the room.

*iniquities-gross injustice
Eg: Her iniquities disgusts me.

*resentments- Ill will felt as a result of a real or imagined grievance
Eg: My resentments were shattered.

flinty- unmerciful
Eg: He has an unmerciful heart.

hulking- heavy and clumsy
Eg: Jason had a rather hulking body for his age.

*cootie- a small, wingless insect

Eg: Lisa was afraid of cooties.

verge- the edge
Eg: I was on the verge of leaving the place when the waiter spilled piping hot soup all over me.

*contemptuous- full of scorn/disdain
Eg: She gave a contemptuous snort.

truant- to be absent from school without permission
Eg: The number of truant students in the school had decreased, much to the delight of the principal.

reckons- to think or assume
(note that this word is an informal word)
Eg: I reckon that he stole the money and blamed Jason.

liable- legally responsible
Eg: You are liable for breaking this vase.

diminutive- small, tiny
Eg: The specimen was so diminutive is could only be seen through a microscope.

indecision- inability to decide
Eg: He felt left out due to his indecision on where to go for the holidays.

fraught- accompanied
(note that fraught often goes with the word "with", so "fraught with" would mean " accompanied by".)
Eg: His statement was fraught with his evidence.

*prospect- an apparant probability for advancement
Eg: There was a prospect of James becoming the new boss of the company.

monosyllabic- having only one syllable
Eg: Examples of monosyllabic words are "no", "why" and "fine".

grim-stern
Eg: He had a grim determination for success

*fractious- not confirming to rule
Eg: Her fractious behaviour got her in detention.

wandered- to move without a destination or purpose
Eg: I wandered around the place facinated.

amiable- showing pleasant qualities
Eg: She displays amibale qualities, such as responsibilty and being hardworking.

magnesia-
a white, tasteless substance, magnesium oxide, MgO, used in medicine.

*rigid-firmly fixed
Eg: The law remains rigid.

*dryly-in an uninteresting/uninterested manner
Eg: "We're going to the park today." Said Joseph dryly.

*judiciously-using of showing judgement
Eg: He judiciously allowed Jacob a number of privileges.

*misdemeanour- a criminal offence less serious than burglary
Eg:-

*felony- any crime punishable by death
Eg: Murder is considered a felony.

*begrudges- to envy the possession or enjoyment of
Eg: I begrudge her lifestyle.

*compromise- a settlement of differences by mutual concessions.
Eg:-

concede- to acknowledge as true
Eg: I concede that Lisa is absolutely correct.

formality- the condition of being formal
Eg:-

disapprobation- disapproval
Eg: He looked at the letter with disapprobation.

*testament- a will
Eg: He had a testament.

diction- a style of speaking/writing
Eg: He haa a very unique diction.

discernible- distinguishable
Eg: Although the twins are look a lot like each other, the are indeed discernible.

*aloft- far above the ground
Eg: The plane was aloft.

nourishment- something that nourishes, eg: food
Eg: We had our nourishments before continuing the 20 km run.
